RINGS ON HER FINGERS

Daisy Clark had been in a coma for more than a month when the doctor said that she had finally died. She was buried on a cool summer day in a small cemetery about a mile from her home.

"May she always rest in such peace," her husband said.

But she didn't. Late that night a grave robber with a shovel and a lantern began to dig her up. Since the ground was still soft, he quickly reached the coffin and got it open.

His hunch was right. Daisy had been buried wearing two valuable rings --- a wedding ring with a diamond in it, and a ring with a ruby that glowed as if it were alive.

The thief got down on his knees and reached into the coffin to get the rings. But they were stuck fast on her fingers. So he decided that the only way to get them was to cut off her fingers with a knife.

But when he cut into the finger with the wedding ring, it began to bleed, and Daisy Clark began to stir. Suddenly she sat up! Terrified, the thief scrambled to his feet. He accidently kicked over the lantern, and the light went out.

He could hear Daisy climb out of her grave. As she moved past him in the dark, he stood there frozen with fear, clutching the knife in his hand.

When Daisy saw him, she pulled her shroud around her and asked, "Who are you?" When the grave robber heard this "corpse" speak, he ran! Daisy shrugged her shoulders and walked on, and never once looked back.

But in his fear and confusion, the thief fled in the wrong direction. He pitched headlong into her grave, fell on the knife, and stabbed himself. While Daisy walked home, the thief bled to death. Posted by Picasa

Halloween and I miss my kids...

Just wishing I could have all these years back... the many things my kids have been throughout the years. I called or text all my kids today and told each and every one of them how much I loved and missed them.

I miss them and all those precious innocent years. The times when they would call my name for their every need.

As I told PC this week-end, I once was the Mexpsychan Martha Stewart. I got creative and if they didn't insist on a store bought costume, I made it myself

HEHEHE"

And so this year is the first year that I can say that I'm growing up... I still have a bit of that child like characteristic in me, she's taking a nap these days... it's about time she comes out to play, don't you think?

It's all about that child like side in all of us, and for me, it's all about the kids...and letting our inner child come out to play now and then!

NOTE: It's not, I repeat... It's NOT my birthday (it was in April) and although this video was put together by my daughter, for my birthday, (last year), it reminds me of how blessed I am and how this time of year is sometimes very hard for me because they are all grown and on their own. I miss you kids...and love you with all my heart!! I thank God every single day for blessing me with such beautiful and loving children!

While the children are trick-or-treating,
the parents are passing out candy,
and the vampires are watching,
for something to eat.
The goblins are waiting for you to dress up,
and have fun,
so they can give you a scare,
'tis Halloween,
and you must prepare,
for the scaries and huntings to arise,
to give you a suprise,
and the vampires,
to bite you,
and the witches to boil you,
and all this to say

HAPPY HALLOWEEN.

Todays Birthday... Charles Atlas

Some things that might already be of known facts to Porta's Cat... but I learned a few things about this man in reading this information out of google's Todays Birthdays.

Charles Atlas (1892)

Angelo Siciliano, better known as "Charles Atlas," was dubbed "The World's Most Perfectly Developed Man" in a NYC contest in 1922. Siciliano had been a small and weak child, but, inspired by the strength of a tiger at the zoo, he built up his endurance by working muscle groups against one another. Atlas went on to achieve phenomenal success marketing his "dynamic tension" fitness methods, now generally known as Isometric exercise. Atlas' physical measurements are buried in a time capsule where? (More here)

World's Most Perfectly Developed Man

In 1922, the publisher of the magazine Physical Culture dubbed him "The World's Most Perfectly Developed Man" in a contest held in Madison Square Garden. He was chosen by a cross-disciplined group of health and medical experts, educators, anthropologists, scientists and medical doctors who viewed Atlas as the "perfect male body" and placed his physical measurements on file for posterity. Atlas's physical measurements are buried in the Crypt of Civilization, a time capsule at Oglethorpe University.

Pop culture references

The song "I Can Make You a Man" from the Rocky Horror Picture Show refers to Charles Atlas in lines such as "A weakling weighing 98-pounds/Will get sand in his face when kicked to the ground", "Makes me shake, makes me wanna take Charles Atlas by the hand/In Just seven days I can make you a man" and "He thinks dynamic tension must be hard work".

Frank N. Furter referring to Rocky Horror: "He carries the Charles Atlas Seal of Approval"

The song "I Can See For Miles" by The Who (on the album The Who Sell Out) is followed by a "commercial" for the Charles Atlas Course ("The Charles Atlas course with dynamic tension can turn you into a beast of a man.")

The song "She's Your Lover Now (Just a Little Glass of Water)" by Bob Dylan, released on The Bootleg Series Volumes 1-3, refers to Charles Atlas in the line "Why must I fall into the sadness / Do I look like Charles Atlas?"

The song "Mr Apollo" by the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band on the album Tadpoles parodies the idea with lead-singer/writer Vivian Stanshall affecting a gruff butch voice. The song involves members of the band singing a fictional body-builders praises while Stanshall alternately sings and offers no-nonsense advice "no tiresome exercises/no tricks/no unpleasant bending/wrestle poodles and win!"

The song "Mr Superman" (Swingles II; lyrics by Tony Vincent Isaacs to the melody of Scott Joplin's 'Elite syncopations') whilst not referring to Charles Atlas directly, implies the connection. In the song, the 'hero', having done the course and having achieved nothing, thinks it's a fraud and becomes an expert in other fields and Mr Superman only in his daydreams. There are some poetic refences to "sand in the face"

The comic book Flex Mentallo by Grant Morrison has several features that parody the Charles Atlas ads, including the costume of the hero and the text "HERO OF THE BEACH" hovering above the hero's head. Jeffrey Hogue brought suit against DC Comics over the character.

In the Kurt Vonnegut novel Cat's Cradle, the religious leader Bokonon is a graduate of Charles Atlas's course.
In the Futurama Season 2 episode "When Aliens Attack", Fry gets sand kicked in his face by a "professional beach bully" who asks for payment for his services, after Fry has won the girl. Leela hits on him but he turns out to be gay.

The song "Sand In My Face" by 10cc on their debut album is a detailed description of Atlas' legendary ads.

The song "Charles Atlas" from the album He Who Laughs Last by A.F.I.

The Marvel Comics title What The--?! parodied the famous Charles Atlas "98 pound weakling" advertisement, in a number of issues. Altas was often referred to "Charles Gutless" and in one particular issue, was portrayed as a woman and named "Charlene" Atlas.

Australian band The Fauves had a minor hit with their song "The Charles Atlas Way" Posted by Picasa

There's Childish and Childlike, then there's just plain stupidity... (Maxine Monday)

We frequently confuse the two words childish and childlike. And the confusion is not because of semantics but due to our lack of understanding of the real meaning of the two words. To bring out the difference let me use the concept of Transactional Analyses (T.A). According to TA we all have three ego states - Parent, Adult and Child. The child ego state can be subdivided into
Rebellious Child , Natural Child and Little Professor.

The Rebellious Child is the one who throws tantrums, is unreasonable, who sulks. His
behavior can be described as childish.

The Natural Child as the name suggests is fun loving, filled with amazement and wonder and is happy and gay.

The Little Professor is creative. He is the one who is artistic and innovative. He is responsible for all the creativity in the world. According to me the Natural Child and the Little Professor can be described as
childlike.

Innocence and Answered Prayers

Come with me to a third grade classroom....

There is a nine-year-old kid sitting at his desk and all of a sudden there is a puddle between his feet and the front of his pants are wet. He thinks his heart is going to stop because he thought he could hold it until recess. It's never happened before, and he knows that; when the boys find out he will never hear the end of it. When the girls find out, they'll never speak to him again as long as he lives.

The boy believes his heart is going to stop, he puts his head down and prays this prayer,"

Dear God, this is an emergency! I need help now! Five minutes from now I'm dead meat.

"He looks up from his prayer and here comes the teacher with a look in her eyes that says he has been discovered. As the teacher is walking toward him, a classmate named Susie is carrying a goldfish bowl that is filled with water. Susie trips in front of the teacher and inexplicably dumps the bowl ofwater in the boy's lap. The boy pretends to be angry, but all the while is saying to himself, "Thank you, Lord! Thank you Lord!" Now all of a sudden, instead of being the object of ridicule, the boy is the object of sympathy. The teacher rushes him downstairs and gives him gym shorts to put onwhile his pants dry out. All the other children are on their hands and knees cleaning up around his desk. The sympathy is wonderful. But as life would have it, the ridicule that should have been his has been transferred to someone else - Susie.

She tries to help, but they tell her to get out. "You've done enough,you klutz!" Finally, at the end of the day, as they are waiting for the bus, the boy walks over to Susie and whispers,! "You did that on purpose, didn'tyou?" Susie whispers back, "I wet my pants once too.

"May God help us see the opportunities that are always around us to do good. Going to church doesn't make you a Christian any more than standing inyour garage makes you a car.

God Bless!

*At what point in a life, does an individual lose that innocence and the will to help those around us who are in need, with no personal greed or interest involved?

I've seen and read some cruel things today amongst some of our children (Teen years), I'm sick to my stomach!! How can a child/children be so cruel? Is it just society itself, can we continue to blame the media as so many in society already do? When are parents going to take repsonsibility and quit making excuses for their children?

God! This is not what I wish for my kids and their future...! I want the innocence back for our children!!

The End of the Raven
By Edgar Allen Poe's Cat

On a night quite unenchanting, when the rain was downward slanting, I awakened to the ranting of the man I catch mice for. Tipsy and a bit unshaven, in a tone I found quite craven, Poe was talking to a Raven perched above the chamber door."Raven's very tasty," thought I, as I tiptoed o'er the floor,
"There is nothing I like more"

Soft upon the rug I treaded, calm and careful as I headed towards his roost atop that dreaded bust of Pallas I deplore. While the bard and birdie chattered, I made sure that nothing clattered, creaked, or snapped, or fell, or shattered, as I crossed the corridor; for his house is crammed with trinkets, curios and wierd decor -
Bric-a-brac and junk galore.

Still the Raven never fluttered, standing stock-still as he uttered, In a voice that shrieked and sputtered, his two cents' worth -
"Nevermore."

While this dirge the birdbrain kept up, oh, so silently I crept up, then I crouched and quickly lept up, pouncing on the feathered bore. Soon he was a heap of plumage, and a little blood and gore -
Only this and not much more.

"Oooo!" my pickled poet cried out, "Pussycat, it's time I dried out! Never sat I in my hideout talking to a bird before; how I've wallowed in self-pity, while my gallant, valiant kitty put and end to that damned ditty" - then I heard him start to snore. Back atop the door I clambered, eyed that statue I abhor,
Jumped - and smashed it on the floor.

I'm Only A Cat

I'm only a cat,

and I stay in my place...

Up there on your chair,on your bed or your face!

I'm only a cat,and I don't finick much...

I'm happy with cream

and anchovies and such!

I'm only a cat,and we'll get along fine...

As long as you know

I'm not yours...

you're all mine!

Red Ribbon Week

Enrique "Kiki" Camarena grew up in a dirt-floored house with hopes and dreams of making a difference.

Camarena worked his way through college, served in the Marines and became a police officer. When he decided to join the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, his mother tried to talk him out it. "I can't not do this," he told her. "I'm only one person, but I want to make a difference."

The DEA sent Camarena to work undercover in Mexico investigating a major drug cartel believed to include officers in the Mexican army, police and government. On Feb. 7, 1985, the 37-year-old Camarena left his office to meet his wife for lunch. Five men appeared at the agent's side and shoved him in a car. One month later, Camarena's body was found in a shallow grave. He had been tortured to death.

In honor of Camarena's memory and his battle against illegal drugs, friends and neighbors began to wear red badges of satin. Parents, sick of the destruction of alcohol and other drugs, had begun forming coalitions. Some of these new coalitions took Camarena as their model and embraced his belief that one person can make a difference. These coalitions also adopted the symbol of Camarena's memory, the red ribbon.

The National Family Partnership organized the first Nationwide Red Ribbon Campaign in 1988. Since that time, the campaign has reached millions of U.S. children.

In 1997, the Texas Commission on Alcohol and Drug Abuse began committing resources to ensure the continuation of the Red Ribbon Campaign in Texas, as well as the hopes and beliefs behind this grassroots effort to protect children from the dangers of alcohol and other drugs.

Carrying Flag

The http://www.awesomestories.com/ is a great site:"Flags of Our Fathers" is a new film about the pivotal battle for Iwo Jima during February-March of 1945.

This website, http://www.awesomestories.com/movies/flags_fathers/flags_fathers_ch1.htm linking to hundreds of photographs and other primary sources from national archives and official military records, tells the story of the battle, the two flag-raisings on Mt. Suribachi (the famous photograph depicts the second raising), the 7th war-bond drive (in which the U.S. government used the picture - and the flag raisers - to generate money and support for the war), the unique nature of the Japanese defenses and the use of Iwo Jima after its capture. Included are photographs of the actual flag raisers and the many medal-of-honor recipients.

Marines Raised Flag

Pl.Sgt. Thomas, 1st Lt. Schrier, Cpl. Charles W. Lindberg and Sgt. Hank Hansen tied the colors in place. Lowery asked Pfc Jim Michaels to crouch down with his carbine. Pfc. Ray Jacobs (some accounts say Louis Charlo) joined the others as the Marines raised the first foreign flag ever to fly on Japanese soil. It was 10:20 in the morning, 23 February 1945.

Stingray attack has man fighting for his life

(10/19/06 - LIGHTHOUSE POINT, FL) - An 81-year-old boater was in critical condition Thursday after a stingray flopped onto his boat and stung him, leaving a foot-long barb in his chest, authorities said.

James Bertakis of Lighthouse Point was on the water with his granddaughter and a friend Wednesday when the stingray flopped onto the boat and stung Bertakis. The women steered the boat to shore and called 911.

"It was a freak accident," said Lighthouse Point acting fire Chief David Donzella. "It's very odd that the thing jumped out of the water and stung him. We still can't believe it."

"Something like this is really, really extraordinarily rare,"

You think...? I'm afraid to go fishing at this point... What are the odds?

Something to think about If Hillary gets elected.

ROTFLMAO!!!

"Abort, Retry, Ignore?"

(Poe's Raven updated --by Anonymous Works)

Once upon a midnight dreary, fingers cramped and vision bleary,
System manuals piled high and wasted paper on the floor,
Longing for the warmth of bed sheets, still I sat there doing spreadsheets.
Having reached the bottom line I took a floppy from the drawer,
I then invoked the SAVE command and waited for the disk to store,
Only this and nothing more.

Deep into the monitor peering, long I sat there wond'ring, fearing,
Doubting, while the disk kept churning, turning yet to churn some more.
But the silence was unbroken, and the stillness gave no token.
"Save!" I said, "You cursed mother! Save my data from before!"
One thing did the phosphors answer, only this and nothing more,
Just, "Abort, Retry, Ignore?"

Was this some occult illusion, some maniacal intrusion?
These were choices undesired, ones I'd never faced before.
Carefully I weighed the choices as the disk made impish noises.
The cursor flashed, insistent, waiting, baiting me to type some more.
Clearly I must press a key, choosing one and nothing more,
From "Abort, Retry, Ignore?"

With fingers pale and trembling, slowly toward the keyboard bending,
Longing for a happy ending, hoping all would be restored,
Praying for some guarantee, timidly, I pressed a key.
But on the screen there still persisted words appearing as before.
Ghastly grim they blinked and taunted, haunted, as my patience wore,
Saying "Abort, Retry, Ignore?"

I tried to catch the chips off guard, and pressed again, but twice as hard.
I pleaded with the cursed machine: I begged and cried and then I swore.
Now in mighty desperation, trying random combinations,
Still there came the incantation, just as senseless as before.
Cursor blinking, angrily winking, blinking nonsense as before.
Reading, "Abort, Retry, Ignore?"

There I sat, distraught, exhausted, by my own machine accosted.
Getting up I turned away and paced across the office floor.
And then I saw a dreadful sight: a lightning bolt cut through the night.
A gasp of horror overtook me, shook me to my very core.
The lightning zapped my previous data, lost and gone forevermore.
Not even, "Abort, Retry, Ignore?"

To this day I do not know the place to which lost data go.
What demonic nether world us wrought where lost data will be stored,
Beyond the reach of mortal souls, beyond the ether, into black holes?
But sure as there's C, Pascal, Lotus, Ashton-Tate and more,
You will be one day be left to wander, lost on some Plutonian shore,
Pleading, "Abort, Retry, Ignore?"

Interviews, Job Hunting and Faith

Well, the interview went really well! I could definitely feel the thoughts and prayers as I sat there for 10 minutes before going in for my interview. A sincere thank you to all that I made my special phone calls to and Katey, thank you. All went really, really well.

I mentioned that the interview was scheduled for 3pm, well, I left my side of town for the interview at 1pm, which had me there by 2. (I had to stop in at Walgreens and pick up a pair of cheater glasses, I left home without my pair....). I was pleasantly surprised with the traffic on my way there, doesn't say what it would be like at 6 am, but none the less, it was good not to have to be crazed before the interview all because of Houston traffic! I didn't want to take the chance of lunch hour traffic, or some major accident or anything. I took all precautions to be there with time to spare.

I prepared myself for the interview the night before, in the sense that I looked up the company's website to familiarize myself with what thier services were to thier patients.

I was very intrigued by their services:
Areas of expertise in their specialty diagnostic and treatment programs provide treatment for a wide range of symptoms and disorders, including:

*Mood disorders, including depression and bipolar disorder(manic depression)
*Anxiety disorders, including panic, social anxiety, generalized anxiety, and posttraumatic stress disorders
*Obsessive-compulsive disorders, including obsessions, compulsions, rituals, body dysmorphic disorder, Tourette's Syndrome, scrupulosity, trichotillomania, hypochondraisis and related cond itions
*Eating disorders, including anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder and severe overeating
*Substance use, including alcohol, narcotics and benzodiazepines, including medically safe detox.
*Posttraumatic stress disorder, self-harm and other trauma-related conditions
*Schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders
*Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and Asperger's Syndrome
*Oppositional defiant disorder
*Borderline personality disorder
*Other issues that seriously impair day to day living, such as family life, work, school and professional behavior

Definitely a challenge in change of atmosphere and not so much career. Their website does not do justice for the property itself. There are eight buildings to the clinic, the layout reminded me of one of our high schools, but much more serene...

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
The clinic has ranked as one of the top psychiatric hospitals in the country in its annual review of the Best Hospitals in America for 14 consecutive years.

Although this being a clinic and the fact that I would be dealing with Dr's., Nurses and counselors (very different from teachers in the educational field), the job description is basically the same. This isn't too far off from what I do now, with a few little exceptions in the Audio and Video side of technology, plus phone systems. Other than that, I'm confident that I can do the job. The question now is; how the other applicants come across...

The staff is very laid back, easy going and the atmosphere alone felt great. I was put at ease immediately. Needless to say, I came out of the interview feeling very good and confident.

I have to say, that interviews can be nerve racking and job hunting, relentlessly exhausting!!! The interview process is especially nerve racking when you haven't been on one for about six to seven years! I sat in my car for 10 minutes and just prayed and asked God to give me the confidence that I needed to get through it. I felt an overwhelming sense of peace wash over me and I placed my clinging cross (Thank you PC) back in my purse and forged on in. I put my faith in the right hands and I walked out of there very happy, if I don't get called back, there's something else that God has in mind for me.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

If anything, I gained some confidence out of all of this, in my ability to sell myself in an interview and not sell myself too short!!! If the job doesn't come through, I got my feet wet in the interview process and I'll be ready for the next door that opens up for me.

A Test In Faith...?

If it was, I jumped in with both feet, running and with my eyes closed!!!

Did I pass? I don't know... but another door has opened up for me.

I recently blogged about a change in career... I walked through that door, but for reasons only God knows, that position was held off due to unforeseen circumstances beyond my control, on the part of the company. Now, I have reason (more like a "gut feeling") that the position I interviewed for, is not where I should be. (I'm following the "gut feeling". Thank you PC {and Kyle your words are still hanging strong with me}).

Another door has been opened for me and this one feels better to walk through, although I'm still nervous, I am interviewing for this new position tomorrow at 3pm. Wish me luck, this is for the same line of work I do now, with a twist of new software and Audio/Video knowledge.

The position is for a Network Support Specialist... I need everyone's prayers and good thoughts again.

A Few Sex Facts

This was received in my inbox from a girlfriend of mine and all I can say is people are getting desperate when it comes to being in fear of breaking a chain for good luck!! Especially for sex!! Are they that hard up??? Was that utterly crass of me??? I don't believe in these, but couldn't help but share the email that's going around at this time... Enjoy!!!

*Note: Although I'm not superstitious, I'm up for discussion on these starred items!!! ;) hehehe...

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is hilarious! Be sure to read the warning at the bottom. I didn't change a word! I'm not messing with the Sex Fairy!
*1. Sex is a beauty treatment. Scientific tests find that when women make love they produce amounts of the hormone estrogen, which makes hair shine and skin smooth.
*2. Gentle, relaxed lovemaking reduces your chances of suffering dermatitis, skin rashes and blemishes. The sweat produced cleanses the pores and makes your skin glow.
*3. Lovemaking can burn up those calories you piled on during that romantic dinner.
*4. Sex is one of the safest sports you can take up. It stretches and tones up just about every muscle in the body. It's more enjoyable than swimming 20 laps, and you don't need special sneakers!
*5. Sex is an instant cure for mild depression. It releases endorphins into the bloodstream, producing a sense of euphoria and leaving you with a feeling of well-being.
*6. The more sex you have, the more you will be offered. The sexually active body gives off greater quantities of chemicals called pheromones. These subtle sex perfumes drive the opposite sex crazy!
**7. Sex is the safest tranquilizer in the world. IT IS 10 TIMES MORE EFFECTIVE THAN VALIUM.
*8. Kissing each day will keep the dentist away. Kissing encourages saliva to wash food from the teeth and lowers the level of the acid that causes decay, preventing plaque build-up.
**9. Sex actually relieves headaches. A lovemaking session can release the tension that restricts blood vessels in the brain.
**10. A lot of lovemaking can unblock a stuffy nose. Sex is a natural antihistamine. It can help combat asthma and hay fever.
This message has been sent to you for good luck in sex. The original is in a room in the basement of the Dwight House Pub. It has been sent around the world nine times. Now sex has been sent to you.
The "Hot Sex Fairy" will visit you within four days of receiving this message, provided you, in turn, send it on. *If you don't, then you will never receive good sex again for the rest of your life. You will eventually become celibate, and your genitals will rot and fall off. This is no joke! Send copies to people you think need sex (who doesn't?). Don't send money, as the fate of your genitals has no price. Do not keep this message. This message must leave your e-mail in 96 hours. Please send ten copies and see what happens in four days. Since the copy must tour the world, you must send it. This is true, even if you are not superstitious.
This and That
Alot has been going on over here in my little corner of the world. So much that I haven't had much time to keep up with my blogging.
I have been busy with an order of 15 shirts to paint for a local corvette club for a Veteran's Day Run. I lost two days this week in painting some shirts, between tieing up some loose ends with some candles that I made for a craft show and spending some quality time with one of my boys that has missed his momma's cooking... I have until November 3rd, I'll be painting alot more than blogging.
I'll do some catching up in the wee hours I'm sure, during the week, on my blog reading and commenting... I just might post a picture of the shirts, not anything grand, it's a simple design that I laid out for the club. The American Flag with the style of Corvette that the individual drives with the words; "VETTES FOR VETERAN'S" - 2006.
Halloween is coming up, and I love Halloween! I have always been known for dressing up for the holiday! ALWAYS... I don't think I see myself dressing up this year, I really don't want to scare PC off with my idea of fun on Halloween! Last year, I dressed up in my High School Cheerleading outfit (Yes people, I still fit in it!!! hehehe... I LOVE IT! 45 years old and still fit in it!) Before that, I went as a Hooker, before that I went Gothic. Other halloween outfits include a Tigress (spandex outfit with my face painted), Another year, a biker bitch, and yet another year, I went dressed as (how to put it without offending anyone.... hmmmm....) a confident lesbian (was that putting it nicely? You'd have to know the theme of the party and the friends throwing the party!) the shirt alone turned some heads! My jeans were torn throughout, I had (cough, cough) "attachements" attached on each side of my belt . Needless to say, I had fun that evening!!
I have pictures of all or most of the above mentioned outfits, whether I show them or not is another time to decide. Wouldn't want to offend anyone that's for sure!
With all of this being said, here is a perfect motorcyle for just the holiday coming up... I don't see room for that biker bitch... ;)
DON'T WE ALL
I was parked in front of the mall wiping off my car. I had just come from the car wash and was waiting for my wife to get out of work. Coming my way from across the parking lot was what society would consider a bum. From the looks of him, he had no car, no home, no clean clothes, and no money. There are times when you feel generous but there are other times that you just don't want to be bothered. This was one of those "don't want to be bothered times."
"I hope he doesn't ask me for any money," I thought. He didn't. He came and sat on the curb in front of the bus stop but he didn't look like he could have enough money to even ride the bus.
After a few minutes he spoke. "That's a very pretty car," he said. He was ragged but he had an air of dignity around him. His scraggly blonde beard kept more than his face warm.
I said, "Thanks," and continued wiping off my car.
He sat there quietly as I worked. The expected plea for money never came. As the silence between us widened, something inside said, "Ask him if he needs any help." I was sure that he would say "yes" but I held true to the inner voice.
"Do you need any help?" I asked.
He answered in three simple but profound words that I shall never forget.
We often look for wisdom in great men and women. We expect it from those of higher learning and accomplishments.
I expected nothing but an outstretched, grimy hand. He spoke the three words that shook me. "Don't we all?" he said.
I was feeling high and mighty, successful and important, above a bum in the street, until those three words hit me like a twelve gauge shotgun.
Don't we all?
I needed help. Maybe not for bus fare or a place to sleep, but I needed help. I reached in my wallet and gave him not only enough for bus fare, but enough to get a warm meal and shelter for the day. Those three little words still ring true. No matter how much you have, no matter how much you have accomplished, you need help too. No matter how little you have, no matter how loaded you are with problems, even without money or a place to sleep, you can give help.
Even if it's just a compliment, you can give that. You never know when you may see someone that appears to have it all. They are waiting on you to give them what they don't have. A different perspective on life, a glimpse at something beautiful, a respite from daily chaos, that only you through a torn world can see.
Maybe the man was just a homeless stranger wandering the streets. Maybe he was more than that.
Maybe he was sent by a power that is great and wise, to minister to a soul too comfortable in itself.
Maybe God looked down, called an angel, dressed him like a bum, and then said, "Go minister to that man cleaning the car, that man needs help."
Don't we all?
