Rattling experience this AM

I had a very rattling experience this morning as I was leaving the courthouse in houston. Talk about lots of people lined up for some reason or other (just as me).

After taking care of my business, I was walking back to my car which was parked two blocks away from the court house. PC has helped me become more aware of my surroundings, so as I walked back to my car, I took notice of all that was going on around me, people, cars, police, etc... I rounded the corned off of the main street and was now in somewhat of a residential area. Still busy as it had car lots and bail bond business' lined up against that main drag. No one around me...

About two buildings down from rounding the corner, I heard "YO!" That alone startled me, who the hell in their right mind, addresses a woman with no harm intended with "YO!" I quickly looked back to fiind a young male, walking very quickly towards me and mumbling "Do you have the time?" This guy came out of no-where! My immediate response was "No, I'm sorry" and started to walk faster to my car, which was still about a block away. I never took my eyes off of him and was not about to reach in to my purse to obtain my cell phone to check the time for him. I didn't want to lose eye contact as he was still rushing towards me. Within that quick second of asking me the time and me responding, I slipped my hand in to my purse and took out the knife that PC gave me. I held it slighly opened under my paperwork until I managed to get to my car. Once getting in my car, I made sure I had my glock ready and available. I was still rattled. The guy disappeared in to a parking lot and I lost sight of him.

The way he addressed himself is what first alarmed me. The fact that he had a "washcloth" on his head (NOT a Doo Rag as PC posted, but a washcloth) which was partially hiding his face, the way he carried himself, the way he spoke to me was the continuation of my fear.

I know that we are supposed to give people the benefit of the doubt, but seeing as where I was and his demeanor, I went with gut instinct. My fear was that if I took the time to lose eye contact and turn to get my phone, I could have been assaulted.

My question is: Was I wrong in treating him the way I did?
