Michael Sean Winters: Are gay priests the problem?
October 18, 2005
These are old postings but some that made their way to my email this morning and one that reminded me of a subject that has always been a concern for me…not just for our Diocese but for all involved, the priesthood and the community. Being Catholic myself there is a genuine concern, but being a human being is the strongest reason. I hate children being victimized or anyone defenseless for that matter, but we can’t just sweep the issue under the rug. These postings bring some good points to the table…plus some that can be debatable and even argued.
I know this is such a touchy subject for some, but I just believe strongly in not judging others, for their color, race, religion, cultural beliefs, sexual preferences, desires, needs, the list goes on... I also believe that if a certain person’s sexuality preference or beliefs ends up harming or killing someone, then action should be taken. I don’t believe in pro-choice, I do believe in the death penalty. Yes, I contradict myself in those beliefs…some people can reform…some can’t, an embryo or baby formed to where you can tell how many fingers it has, the heart is beating, doesn’t have a choice. My voice is for that individual that doesn’t have one. My choice…
We are all different, and ethics comes to play in this subject very strongly for some and more so for others, but we are all entitled to our own thoughts, beliefs and opinions, isn’t that what makes this a great country?
It kills me to see anyone belittled, scrutinized, their sole being; torn down because of their individual beliefs, who they are, weather they were born that way or grew up to just have a deep feeling that “something” was not right within them and a “new” being comes from the indifferent feeling.
I just can’t say any louder how we need to Live and Let Live. If there is some injustice done, then by all means, action needs to be taken…but the question here today is do we really want to “Drive Gay Priests Underground?”
I have to agree with how the article ends…
“When I approach my death, I want a kind priest at hand, and I frankly don’t care what his sexual preference is. I suspect that most Catholics feel that way. It is a thing that the right-wingers hate to admit, but the Christian Gospels do not suggest a culture war. They suggest that we be on the lookout for hypocrisy, especially our own.”
When I approach death, I hope my mind will be on my own sins. Yeah, I’d like a sweet priest, but that isn’t really what will matter at that point.”
Again, this may offend some people out there, but we can’t continue to close our eyes to such things in our world… I may have touched on a bad subject today and pissed off others, but at the end of it all, I still believe in living in “Harmony and Peace”.
